On September 15th, 1998 Friends of Auburn/Tahoe Vista-Placer County Animal Shelter was born. This marked the beginning of an exciting new era at these shelters, in which the all volunteer organization took on projects for which the county had limited or no funding available. At the time our top priorities were:
* Increase shelter hours of operation as an effort to increase adoption percentages * mandate a health admittance protocol in the form of a vaccination program * provide public education seminars * and lastly, improve on the shelter facility.
Looking back over the years, I couldn't be more pleased with our accomplishments:
* We increased shelter hours by taking the "show on the road" with mobile adoptions. You might catch a glimpse of us tooling down the freeway in the "retired" animal control truck, packed with shelter animals, on our way to yet another mobile adoption faire. * The shelter vaccinates every animal that arrives and we now have a veterinarian spearheading a wellness program. Thanks to a generous donation, Friends now has a spay/neuter/treatment suite at the shelter facility. * We always enjoy the opportunity to interact with kids and provide shelter tours whenever requested. Of course our annual Doggie Derby event is a place where pet owners get great educational material and advice. I've watched attendance grow from ~50 to over 700 pet lovers and their dogs attend this one-of-a-kind canine carnival. * Our current kennel door campaign will provide every dog run with a less obstructed view for people to see and meet the dog inside. As we identify additional needs at the shelter, we'll solicit donations to make capital improvements or purchase items.
But wait; there's more to report. In partnership with the county, the donated adoption facility that we refer to as "The Cat House" adopted 489 shelter cats/kittens in 2001. In 1998, there were no foster homes affiliated with the shelter, today, we have over 32 of these life-saving refuges. There is one thing that has remained constant during this entire time and that is our need for your membership support and donations to assist us in continuing to provide these services to approximately 5,500 animals at the Auburn and Tahoe Vista shelters annually. From caring for hundreds of homeless cats, repairing and maintaining our transport vehicle, to facility improvements - your dollars are critical.
On behalf of the many animals that benefit from the generosity of caring people like you, I thank you for your support.
