The Kugsha Dog - A Breed With A History Of A Thousand Years

The Kugsha Dog is also known as the Amerindian Malamute and it is a breed with a very long history, which goes back 1000 years ago. Originally, it was used in America for pulling weights. This freight pulling dog has an appearance similar to that of a wolf with very dense hair. The most common colors for its hair are white, fawn and brindle. Its double coat is very suitable for cold weather and the breed is actually said not to be able to survive in warm climates. Even if it might survive warmer climates, it will not be happy in such conditions and might face health issues consequently.

Where size is concerned, its height is of about 20 to 27 inches and its weight can stand between 60 and 106 pounds. Its muzzle is slightly cone-shaped, its eyes are arranged obliquely and its triangular ears are small and stand vertically. The dogs neck is long and presents strong muscles. Its legs also have very strong muscles, with the forelegs standing straight and the hind-legs having a somewhat angulated position. Compared to its height, its length is a little greater and shape-wise, it has a rectangular body. Its bushy tail is commonly drooping. Overall, it is a strong and speedy breed of dog.

Temperament and personality-wise, the Kugsha is a very intelligent breed of dog that gets strongly attached to its owners. Compared to other dogs, its learning potential is visible earlier in life. Only quite recently domesticated, it is happy to please its owners. Although these dogs pay attention carefully to their owners orders, they are not always good around children or other pets living in the same family. This is the case because they do have a predatory nature, even if they have been domesticated.

They are not the cuddly type, but their owners will surely respect their intelligence. Keeping such a dog in chains is rather difficult, as it likes activity and space. It needs lots of exercise and long walks, so that it can consume its energy. When allowing these dogs to get bored, they might get destructive while trying to find something to do. They also are unhappy when left alone for longer periods of time. They do not easily trust strangers.

Although the Kugsha Dog has a very long history, this breed is not recognized by the AKC (American Kennel Club) or by other important kennel clubs.

Looking at its grooming necessities, it should be brushed twice a week, given its rich coat. Its undercoat will come out in clumps twice during a year. Given its adaptation to cold climates, it is a dog breed that is best kept in its habitat and not moved to areas with different weather patterns. Actually, it should be said that it is not really known if anyone breeds Kugshas anymore, although a club was once dedicated especially to this breed.

Part of the Huskies breed, the Kugsha Dog might be especially interesting for the fact that its genealogical tree shows traces back to wolves.
