Serving since 1919, the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society is an open admission facility that takes in abandoned, abused, homeless, and unwanted animals that need tender loving care until they can find a permanent home. Our mission is to help these animals find their new permanent home, prevent animal cruelty, and educate people on the humane treatment of animals.

The SFAHS takes in about 7,000-8,000 animals a year. These animals are mostly dogs and cats as well as rabbits, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, lizards of any kind, birds, and wildlife for rehabilitation.

The SFAHS is a non-profit organization that is operated by 20 staff members and numerous volunteers. The animals and the staff depend on our volunteers. The volunteers help out with anything from dog walking to grooming to cat therapy. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, check out our volunteer page to find out how.

Since SFAHS is a non-profit organization, we depend on contributions, donations, our endowment fund, a portion of sales from our retail store, PETAPALOOZA, and some of the fees for services that are provided. Keep reading to meet some of the staff that help the Humane Society provide ultimate care for our animals.
