In the late 1970's Bill Mersington was appointed Agent for the BCSPCA in the Shuswap area. His wife, Zem, started a cat and dog adoption service, at first by telephone and later in the Shoppers' Guide. In October, 1983 Shuswap Branch was formed and members started their fund raising to build the animal shelter. In addition to funds from bingo and other projects, the branch received a major grant from the Margaret Haney fund. The shelter opened in June 1987. A bequest from the estate of Helen Webb made possible the extention of the shelter in 1991. A bequest from the estate of Jean Clayden of Sorrento in the mid1990's helped greatly in keeping the shelter in operation.
