Secondhand Shelties, Ltd. is a not-for-profit Chicagoland area breed rescue for Shetland Sheepdogs ("Shelties"). Formed and incorporated in the State of Illinois in 1995, Secondhand Shelties is licensed by the Illinois Department of Agriculture. Secondhand Shelties helps find new homes for abandoned,orphaned, and unwanted shelties. We are not dog breeders nor are we members of any breed club. Although we receive referrals for both adoptions and owner give-ups from breeders and clubs, our rescue functions as a corporation and separate entity from any club or rescue. We do not exchange dogs with other rescues. Once a sheltie is in our program, the dog stays with us until the dog is adopted - regardless of the time it may take to find the "perfect home" for that particular dog. Our "Secondhand Shelties" come from many backgrounds. Approximately half of the shelties are given up by their owners. The other half come from animal control facilities, shelters or are found wandering the streets. Everyone involved with Secondhand Shelties volunteers their services, their homes, and their time because of their love for this breed. All foster homes are licensed to insure the best for each and every one of our dogs. Because all our shelties live in foster homes while awaiting adoption, they are able to be seen in a normal home environment.
