The Quincy Humane Society is one of the oldest humane organizations in the country. Organized in 1880 as the Quincy Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the primary concern of the organization, “was doing good work, if quiet and modest work, keeping the welfare of the city’s animals.” Just two years later in 1883 our founding civic leaders changed the name to the Quincy Humane Society. The Quincy Humane Society’s philosophy has always been “Improving the quality of life in Quincy for pets and their people.”

The first known office in 1896 was located at 411 Hampshire, which was occupied by the A.H. Whitney Organ Company. Some of the first duties of the board officers was to “actively look after the comfort of dumb animals and to see that the fountains in Washington Park were properly taken care of and fresh water was always plentiful.”

In 1937 the Hampshire property was sold to Una and William McDonald (McDonald Stove Co.)

In 1939 the QHS Board of Directors submitted a proposal to maintain their first shelter for dogs. The Klarner house at 3100 State was to be the new facility. The Klarner sisters, maintained this facility, keeping stray dogs until an adoptive family could be found. A more permanent location was constructed by the city of Quincy a few years later on Rt. 57. The Quincy Humane Society assisted the city on Rt. 57 but then in 1980, the society relocated to their current location at 3411 S. 12th Street.

The Quincy Humane Society not only helped implement and strengthen their mission and philosophies throughout history, but also has remained a key player in the well being of all the animals in Quincy and the Tri-States. Even today, the society is challenged with “day-to-day situations” where an animal is not wanted or loved for many reasons.

It is our promise to the public, the Quincy Humane Society will work faithfully to build a strong community by reducing neglect, abuse, and exploitation of animals. Upholding that promise today, the Humane Society offers the following comprehensive range of services and programs:
