The Prince William County Police Department's Animal Control Bureau is responsible for the Animal Shelter. In addition, the Bureau enforces animal welfare laws, conducts animal education seminars, houses stray and unwanted animals in a clean and safe environment and coordinates the adoption of animals.

The department also investigates complaints of cruelty to animals, quarantines animals that have bitten humans, providex 24-hour emergency service for injured or stray animals and removes stray dogs and livestock from streets and public areas. The Animal Shelter is operated in accordance with state and local law.

When a stray animal is found and brought into the shelter, it is scanned for a microchip identifier. The shelter has scanners that can recognize chips by Avid, HomeAgain and Trovan (InfoPet). If you have your pet microchipped, be sure to have your veterinarian periodically scan for it so you know where it is located on your pet. The implanted chip has been known to migrate to a different location under the skin due to multiple factors.

The Animal Shelter is located adjacent to the Prince William County Landfill off of Route 234. The address is 14807 Bristow Road, Manassas, VA 20112. The telephone number is 703-792-6465. After 5 p.m., call 703-792-6500.
