The Peterborough Humane Society, a registered charitable organization dependent on public donations, was established in 1941. As an Affiliated Society of the Ontario SPCA, with the mandate to facilitate and provide for the prevention of cruelty to animals and their relief therefrom, our Humane Society offers a wide range of vital services to the community.

Working in cooperation with many agencies and departments we continue promoting responsible pet ownership concepts through community outreach, one-on-one encounters with residents and the use of legal action as the last resort.

Approximately 3,000 animals are received at the shelter each year, many of which are lost, injured or abandoned. While in our care they are provided with food, care, shelter and lots of love and attention. We are an excellent choice if you are seeking a companion animal. The Society has many purebred and mixed breed animals available for adoption. If you are looking for something specific, call and we will let you know what's available for adoption. The Peterborough Humane Society also receives wildlife and pocket pets such as rabbits, turtles, birds, snakes and rodents. Wildlife are rehabilitated and released into their natural habitat.
