Prison Tails is a program developed by Mixed Up Mutts, Inc. in cooperation with Westville Correctional Center in Westville, IN. Offenders have been paired and each team is responsible for 24 hour a day care and training of one dog during each session. Instructors and volunteers from MUM visit the level 2 (security) facility at least three times weekly for the 10 week training sessions. Elements of this rehabilitative program include required reading, classroom instruction and discussion, writing and report presentation, as well as visiting speakers and experts. Offender trainer/handlers concentrate on teaching homeless dogs obedience skills and social behaviors. Through special arrangements with the AKC, dogs and handlers receive Canine Good Citizen Certificates. Trainer/Handlers also receive "Prison Tails" certificates of achievement for each dog trained.
