The local Merced SPCA received non-profit status in 1967. The two women responsible for this were, Pauline Molles and Shirley Sharp, both Canadian immigrants transplanted to Merced. At that time, the conditions at the Old County Animal Control on Belcher Avenue were horrid. After seeing this they took steps to find an improvement for the quality of care of abandoned and unwanted pets.

In 1982, through her "Will", Katherine L. Kanen of Livingston, donated 35,000 dollars to the Merced SPCA in memory of her dog "Lobo". The money was specifically earmarked for acquiring, building and equipping a shelter. Those funds were invested in a mutual fund which grew to 130,000 dollars by 1998.

In 1998 the family of the late Jim Barger notified the Merced SPCA that the property of the once Barger Veterinary Clinic was available for purchase. The cost for the property was 80,000 dollars and was zoned industrial. The Merced SPCA notified it's list of members to vote on it's purchase. The vote was a landslide for "BUY".

On April 29th 2000, the Merced SPCA opened it's doors to the public with the official name as; the Katherine L. Kanen Animal Adoption Center. In our first year alone we have adopted out over 300 dogs and cats from our shelter. In addition to our shelter adoptions our volunteers and receptionist has matched potential adopters to pets needing homes from the various phone inquiries and pet requests that come in daily. Something to be proud of!
