Hundreds of pets from our shelter are adopted into new homes each year to qualified owners. There is no time limit set for how long adoptablee animals are kept. Many of the animals we receive come from owners who for various reasons cannot keep their pets. Other animals are strays not claimed by their owners.
A very large part of our work is educating the public. We give tours of the shelter for groups, take advantage of the media coverage, speak before clubs and organizations. We also put out an informative newsletter and appear on television.
We have five directors and four officers, which are members of the Martin County Humane Society. All positions are elected every two years. Members are encouraged to help at the shelter, fundraise and attend monthly meetings. There is always a need for more helping members. The Animal Control Officer is not a member of the Martin County Humane Society, as his work priority is the Fairmont Police Department. We do work together when ever possible.
