The La Plata County Humane Society was established as a 501C animal shelter in 1973. The Thrift Store was established in 1990 to raise monies for a new facility. The shelter is directed by a board of nine elected volunteers. The shelter has a capacity to house 49 dogs and 26 cats. The Shelter also has a receiving area that can hold 9 dogs and up to 20 cats. The animals are isolated from the general public for health precautions. In 2000, we hired a Veterinarian on staff to insure that all animals are spayed/neutered before leaving our facility.
La Plata County Humane Society is a non-profit organization created to enhance the quality of life in our community by encouraging the humane treatment of animals. It is the Society's philosophy to preserve the lives of the animals entrusted to it so long as (I) they do not have life threatening injury or illness, (ii) are not vicious, (iii) there are funds and space available to provide the animals with a safe and healthy environment.
The Humane Society was created to provide shelter for homeless animals, to rescue animals in distress, to assist in the investigation and prosecution of reported cruelty and abuse, to attempt to find homes for unwanted animals, and to encourage kindness and responsibility toward all living things through humane education.
