People relinquish their pets for many reasons; other animals also become accidentally separated from their owners or are abandoned, and are brought to the Humane Society as strays. On any given day, we accept as many as 50 of these dogs, cats, small mammals, reptiles, and birds.

Each animal brought to the Society is given a physical examination, nourishing food, fresh water, and a warm, clean, safe, comfortable place to stay. There is a separate grooming room for the shelter animals. Volunteers frequently help by taking dogs for walks, playing with the cats, and otherwise socializing with the animals.

Animals are kept at the shelter as long as possible, but room must constantly be made for more incoming cats and dogs. When there is no longer space for pets who have not been adopted, they are euthanized by swift, painless injection.

The Humane Society encourages adoption of its animals by offering a complete package for a single low price, which includes the animal's spay or neuter surgery, first vaccinations, a complete physical examination by an independent veterinarian, and a leash for dogs or a carrier for cats. The Society also does its best to make sure that its animals are adopted only to responsible, caring homes. All potential adopters are required to fill out a preliminary questionnaire and undergo counseling with a shelter employee before adoptions are approved.

Animals from the Humane Society of Utah are also available for adoption on weekends at local PetsMart and Petco outlets. The same care and attention are given these adoptions as the ones processed from the shelter.
