The Humane Society of Atchison is a non-profit organization. We are a no-kill shelter, only using euthanasia for aggression, long term illness, or serious injury where the animal would suffer. This of course means that we have limited space and need many adoptions in order to have space to save more animals. The Humane Society of Atchison was founded November- 1991.

The shelter opened April 1, 2000.

We are a humane society, not the city animal control. Atchison also has a city animal control. The animal control has dogs up for adoption also. We take some of the animal control's dogs if we have room, but often, we don't have room and they are euthanized. We recommend adopting from our city animal control if you don't find your perfect fur'ever friend from us.
