In the Beginning
DAN was created in 1994 by Dr. Stephen Dean and Linda Antoniucci. "We were dismayed by the number of dogs that were being euthanized at the shelters". Many were lost dogs that may have been claimed had the owner been aware that they had been captured. What most people don't realize is that a dog can cover 15-20 miles a day if it should wander away from home.

Dr. Dean and Linda realized that many people had no idea that the Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control Center existed, let alone where or what it was. They started out by taking video tapes of the dogs to public places to raise awareness for the need of adoption. Then they began circulating ads in as many newspapers as they could afford to get people aware of the number of dogs that were needlessly being euthanized. By spreading the word about the available dogs, many of them have been spared, but there are still 80-90 dogs put down every month at the Center alone.

With the thought that more dogs could be spared via the outreaching internet, DAN went "hi-tech" with its first web site in November of 1998. Since then they have added a fully automated "Classifieds" web site called k9finder.com where animal control officers and the public can post lost/found, adoptable, and "looking for" ads on their own.

Today
Through its web site, DAN reports stories of animal welfare, legislative initiatives promoting animal welfare, stories of adoptions and other important animal rights issues. Funding

Approximately 25% of all funds come from the public through the form of donations. The balance of the money is generated by personal contributions of its founders Linda Antoniucci and Dr. Steve Dean. It is important to note that while many organizations are top heavy with administrative costs, 95% of all the money that has been contributed to the DAN program has been used to maintain the web sites or promote dog adoption through personal appearances.
