Crosswinds Equine Rescue, Inc. became incorporated in the state of Illinois in May, 2003. Immediately upon receiving incorporation as a membership organization, Crosswinds filed for its Federal 501c3 status to be considered as a charity for animal welfare.
In June, 2003, the IRS awarded Crosswinds an Advance Ruling 501c3 charitable status. This means, briefly, that all donations as of the date of incorporation have the same tax deductible status as donations to other charities like the United Way. It also means that over the next several years the IRS will watch to ensure that Crosswinds meets the goals it set and does in fact become a primarily-publicly-supported charity. Regardless of the long term outcome for Crosswinds, all donations received beginning May 2003 until the final ruling is made keep the same tax deduction benefits for the donors.
