The Muskingum County Humane and Animal Society was incorporated in 1959 by a small group of Zanesville ladies. In 1964, the Society became a corporation with an IRS 501(c)(3) designation. The first shelter building, on Licking Road, was constructed in 1968 and expanded in 1984.
In 1988, a charity bingo license was obtained. The resulting steady boost to the funding of the Shelter enabled the establishment of a building fund and the hiring of four employees. This allowed the Shelter to begin operating regularly on a seven day a week schedule.
Over almost 40 years, the shelter's leaders have focused on raising the necessary funds and spending them judiciously to care for the area's abandoned animals. Contributions from so many in this community have allowed the Shelter to operate--almost completely debt-free--since its inception.
In 1998, the board of directors confirmed the need for an endowment fund. A goal of $1.5 million has been established. To date, almost one-third of those funds have been raised. Fund raising activities that historically focused on the building fund are now directed at increasing the endowment fund.
