The Chow Chow Childrens Furry Friend and Fierce Protector

Chow Chow is a breed very appreciated by adults and children alike. Mature dogs of this breed are usually quite small and have the appearance of puppies - this is how it can be explained why they are so loved all around the world.

Origins
This dog breed originates from China, where it is known as Songshi Quan, or other said, "puffy-lion dogs". The exact origin in China is not known, but it is certain that this breed is very old; many fossils of this breed were dated back to several million years ago.

Physical Features

Dogs like this are sturdy, have a squared profile, a small skull and erect ears and are covered by a dense double coat. This coat is thick and coarse, being in most cases red. Other colors that this type of dogs could have are: black, cinnamon (light tan to brown) and cream. The height of a male is between 19 and 22 inches, and that of a female - between 18 and 20 inches. Regarding their weight, we can say that a male weighs around 70 pounds, while a female around 60 pounds. The litter size of a dog like this is 3-6 puppies.

Temperament
Because they are very friendly, Chow Chow dogs are very good companions for children. However, they have to be bought when they are young puppies, in order for them to develop having certain people around them. This is necessary because once they get used to certain people, they have difficulties in accepting other people as well. Also related to their behavior, some dogs can become overprotective and emphasize a fierce aggression towards strangers that enter their territory.

Training
These dogs can easily overcome potential behavior problems, if they live with one human family since their birth or near their birth date. They are not excessively active, which means that they can be easily housed in an apartment. Still, they require to be walked daily, just like any other type of dog.

Health Issues
Dogs like this are very popular. Because of such large interest in Chow Chows, many studies have been conducted to assess any specific health issues. And what most of them say is that this dog breed is predisposed to skin melanoma, lymphoma, cataracts, diabetes mellitus, glaucoma and hip dysplasia. Pay attention though: simply because they are predisposed to these health conditions and diseases, doesn't mean that they will necessarily develop them; owners that love their pets always make sure that their precious companions stay healthy for a very long time.

Life Expectancy
According to studies, the lifespan of such dog breed ranges from 9 to 15 years. For an increased lifespan, the dog has to be exercised regularly, loved and fed healthy food.

Conclusion
If you want a good guard and a furry toy at the same time, our recommendation is to get yourself a Chow Chow, because this type of dog will provide you with everything you want, in terms of play, loyalty and friendship.
