Pet Tips
Medical records and traveling with your pet
When we think about our pets, we generally think in terms of toys, food, and treats. However, pets, just like people have important documentation that is necessary for their health and well-being.
The proper documentation can be helpful in various situations such as vacationing with your pet; leaving your pet with a pet-sitter or at a boarding facility; identifying a lost pet; and even bringing your pooch to a doggie daycare for some fun and exercise. Some of the information that we recommend you keep close at hand includes:
1. An up-to-date record of your pet's vaccinations. You should include the name, address, and telephone number of your veterinarian, whom should also be able to print this information our for you if you do not currently have a copy.
2. A record of any medical conditions your pet may have along with medication names, dosages, and instructions for use.
3. Accurate and up-to-date records of your pet's identification numbers. This may include license tags, tattoos, and microchips all of which should provide valid contact information for you the owner.
4. A clear, recent (preferably close-up) photo of your pet. This will help if your pet is lost, or if someone has found your pet and is not sure how to tell if it is really yours.
5. Emergency contact information. This should include both an alternate number where you may be reached, such as a cell phone or work number... as well as a trusted friend or family member's name and telephone number (it is always a good idea to ask them for permission first so they aren't taken by surprise!).
Make sure you keep two copies of each piece of documentation. We recommend that you pick up a couple of folders at any office supply store and place one copy into each folder. This will ensure that you'll have one copy for yourself, plus one extra for trips or emergencies. Put the folders up in an easy-to-remember place and just grab one when needed!
