The Aryan Molossus
Once a Warrior, Today a Loyal Companion and a Family-Protector

Should you ever decide that you need a big dog, with an imposing posture, which can look threatening and majestic at the same time, the Aryan Molossus is definitely one breed that you must take into consideration.

The Armant
The Egyptian Dog with a Lot of Love to Give

To some of you, the Armant is better known as the “Egyptian Sheepdog” and, just as the name suggests it, it was bred to be a herding dog. However, in ancient times, it was used mostly as a guard dog. This breed is originally from Egypt and named after the town of Armant. Its loyalty and agility are the two main characteristics which make this dog special.

The Atlas Terrier
The Small Dog With a Massive Dose of Energy

At a glimpse, the Atlas Terrier can be easily mistaken with the Jack Russell Terrier. However, there are some differences that may help you tell these two cousins apart. Before deciding to buy or adopt a dog of this breed, there are some things that you have to take into consideration. Unfortunately, this is quite a rare breed of dogs in our days.

Anglos-Francaises de Petite Venerie
It Is Impossible Not to Love Them

Anglos-Francaises de Petite Venerie are the smallest dogs in the Anglos-Francais category. However, the name „Petite”, meaning „small”, is not at all referring to the size of the dogs, but to the game they are after. Even if they've been around since the 16th century, today, these dogs are not easy to find. So if you have decided to adopt one, you can be sure that you will have a unique pet.

Pet Tips

The Portuguese Water Dog

If a water loving dog that can perform tricks and aid in therapy is what would make your life better, then you should adopt a Portuguese water dog. These muscular, medium sized dogs are great water lovers that used to be strong aiding hands in the fishing industry before technology emerged. Thus, there is no surprise that they do fantastic jobs in water trials and agility performances.

Nicknamed the Portie, this breed comes in various colors - white, black, gray, silver fox, brown (in various shades) - and coat patterns: for example, white with dark spots or black / brown with white markings. Their single-layered coat is mostly thick and has a wavy or curly texture. This means that the Portuguese water dog must be groomed regularly. This breed is basically hypoallergenic, which means people with allergies can own such a pet too.

When it comes to temperament, the Portie is a highly intelligent dog that always listens to its owner. Highly obedient, the Portuguese water dog is a loyal companion that becomes easily attached to people. Just like any other dog, it creates amusing moments and is fun to be around. You will never get bored with such a canine friend by your side.

As long as you cover their need for exercise, these dogs will be calm and happy. Porties learn fast and quickly understand instructions. Their braveness and highs spirits makes them great companions for children. They even get along well with other house pets, yet need some time to get to know cats in order to have no problems with them.

Training a Portie is a piece of cake when you know how to communicate with your canine friend.

You should also know that the Portuguese water dog will assume some liberties if the owner does not know how to handle its personality and establish some limits. You must keep an eye on how you speak to it, as these dogs have the ability sense your moods from the tone of your voice.

It is in the Portie’s blood to chew, so make sure to provide things he is allowed to chew on in order to avoid inconveniences. And never forget to show him you are the “pack leader” that supplies his need for love, food and physical exercise.

Porties can accommodate really well with apartment life as long as they are well-exercised. They do not need large yards and are mostly happy living close to their family. They live about 10-14 years and should be tested for health issues if you want them to breed. Special attention must be given to their health, because Porties can develop dysplasia and are prone to a fatal nerve disease called GM-1 storage disease.

Because of their ability to interact and attachment to humans, Porties are great as therapy and assistance dogs in the case of people with special needs. Overall, the Portuguese water dog is a trustworthy companion suitable for any person that chooses to adopt one – and all the effort you put in owning such a dog will pay off.
