The Aryan Molossus
Once a Warrior, Today a Loyal Companion and a Family-Protector

Should you ever decide that you need a big dog, with an imposing posture, which can look threatening and majestic at the same time, the Aryan Molossus is definitely one breed that you must take into consideration.

The Armant
The Egyptian Dog with a Lot of Love to Give

To some of you, the Armant is better known as the “Egyptian Sheepdog” and, just as the name suggests it, it was bred to be a herding dog. However, in ancient times, it was used mostly as a guard dog. This breed is originally from Egypt and named after the town of Armant. Its loyalty and agility are the two main characteristics which make this dog special.

The Atlas Terrier
The Small Dog With a Massive Dose of Energy

At a glimpse, the Atlas Terrier can be easily mistaken with the Jack Russell Terrier. However, there are some differences that may help you tell these two cousins apart. Before deciding to buy or adopt a dog of this breed, there are some things that you have to take into consideration. Unfortunately, this is quite a rare breed of dogs in our days.

Anglos-Francaises de Petite Venerie
It Is Impossible Not to Love Them

Anglos-Francaises de Petite Venerie are the smallest dogs in the Anglos-Francais category. However, the name „Petite”, meaning „small”, is not at all referring to the size of the dogs, but to the game they are after. Even if they've been around since the 16th century, today, these dogs are not easy to find. So if you have decided to adopt one, you can be sure that you will have a unique pet.

AKC Dog Breeds: a Surprise to Meet Them in Dog Shelters?

The American Kennel Club (AKC) is the only non-profit registry of purebred dog’s pedigree in the United States. It was found in 1884 and it is today the largest purebred dog registry in the world. According to the Mission Statement posted on the organization’s website, AKC promotes the sport of purebred dogs and breeding for type and function; they advocate for purebred dogs as family companion, advance canine health and well-being. The most popular AKC dog breeds in 2010 were:

1. Labrador retriever
2. German shepherd
3. Yorkshire terrier
4. Beagle
5. Golden retriever
6. Bulldog
7. Boxer
8. Dachshund
9. Poodle
10. Shih Tzu

The requirements to register a dog under one of the AKC dog breeds are simple. Most other kennel clubs apply stricter standards for registration. For AKC registration, owners must introduce their dog and show proof that it was born from AKC registered parents belonging to the same breed. The newly introduced dog’s litter has to be registered as well.

AKC dog breeds are classified into 8 major groups as following: sporting, hound, working, terrier, toy, non-sporting, herding, and miscellaneous class. All groups include some of the most popular dog breeds in America. The high popularity of purebred dogs and the economic turndown of the latest years have proved to be a poisonous combination for dog breeds. Many valuable pets bought initially for a high price ended up in rescue groups or pet shelters. Despite the fact that big money was invested in their purchase, training and medical care, they meet in the end the same fate as many mix breed or stray dogs: uncertainty and incidental death.

Unfortunately, breeding is encouraged mainly based on appearance and no health factors are taken into consideration. Spaying and neutering would save millions of canine lives. A great number of puppies are born each year because of breeders who breed dogs related to each other. All this negatively affects the overall health of breeds and nowadays virtually every breed has hereditary diseases.

If you would like to own a purebred dog it might be a better idea to look around in dog shelters or breed rescue groups for AKC dog breeds than to support puppy mills and the often crude and filthy breeding conditions by buying a purebred puppy.

There are thousands of dog shelters across the country and they all have new arrivals each and every day. Stray mix breed dogs, abandoned purebreds and puppies unaccepted for AKC dog breeds registration make the most of these arrivals. These are saddening facts and are a harsh reality-check for our society. The good news for you however, is that in case you do not find the dog of your choice among the inhabitants of shelters, all you have to do is to be patient. Fill in a waiting list with your preferences and the perfect dog for you will someday be there to join you for (a better) life.
