Sarplaninac

Sarplaninac

Alternative Names: Yugoslavian shepherd dog, Illyrian shepherd dog

Country of Origin: Serbia and Macedonia

History: The Sarplaninac is believed to have developed from Tibetan shepherd dogs that were brought from Asia to the Balkans. The descendents of these dogs have worked as flock guardians in Sarplanina, the mountainous areas of Serbia and Macedonia, for more than two thousand years. The isolation of their mountain homes kept the Sarplaninac pure. It is now kept as a flock guardian as well as a companion across Europe and in North America.

Physical Description: The Sarplaninac is large, well-proportioned, and muscular dog with a body that is slightly longer than it is tall. It has a broad head with a large, black nose; dark almond shaped eyes; and V shaped drop ears. The tail is long and sabrelike. The heavy, rough coat is self-colored, ranging from white to dark gray. Some have white markings on the chest and toes.

Height: 22.5 to 24 inches minimum

Weight: 66 to 99 pounds

Temperament: This breed is affectionate with family but wary of strangers. It makes an excellent guard and is courageous and intelligent. It is independent minded and can be dominant.

Activity Level: Moderate

Best Owner: This breed does best with a dog experienced owner in a suburban or rural area.

Special Needs: Fenced yard, leashed, socialization
