History: The Kangal is an ancient flock guardian from the Kangal district of the Sivas Province in Turkey. It was kept by villagers in the area but was especially associated with the large, land-holding Aga family. The Kangal is considered the national dog of Turkey and is often depicted wearing a spiked collar. It is believed to descend from early mastiffs.
Physical Description: The Kangal dog is a large, powerful, heavy dog that is slightly longer than it is tall. The large head has a deep, blunt muzzle that is shorter than the skull. There is a distinctive furrow that runs from the skull to the muzzle. The nose is large and black and the eyes range from deep brown to amber. The medium-size drop ears are rounded and can be cropped erect or left natural, they are carried higher when the dog is alert. The long, bushy tail curls and the feet are large. There is a double coat with a short dense outer coat that ranges in color from gray to dun, with a black mask and ears. There may be white on the feet, chest and tail.
Height: 28 to 32 inches
Weight: 90 to 145 pounds
Temperament: The Kangal dog is strong and courageous, affectionate with family but wary with strangers. It is naturally calm but will fight if necessary.
Activity Level: high
Best Owner: The Kangal dog does best in a rural or suburban home with the opportunity to work. Owners should be dog-experienced and active.
Special Needs: exercise, fenced yard, leashed, socialization, supervision with children and other animals
