History: This is a very French sheepherding and livestock guarding
dog that was developed in the Picardie region of northeastern France. It may be a descendant of Celtic or Asian
dogs. Some believe the breed to be related to the briard or Belgian shepherd
dogs. The berger Picard came close to extinction following both world wars and continures to be rare both in and outside France, where it is still used as a herding
dog.
Physical Description: The berger Picard is a medium size, muscular, and rectangular shaped
dog. It has a broad head with a skull that is equal in length to the slightly tapered muzzle. There is a large, black nose, brown eyes, and large ears that are naturally erect. The long tail curves slightly at the tip. The double coat has a soft, dense undercoat and a medium length, rough, terrier-like outer coat. It has eyebrows, a mustache and a beard. The coat is gray of various shades. A slight white marking is permitted on the chest and toe tips.

Weight: 50 to 70 pounds
Temperament: This is an active, friendly
dog that enjoys children. It is intelligent and independent minded with a strong work drive. It tends to be vocal.

dog experienced owner in a rural home.
