There are some
dogs who just don’t do well in boarding kennels. It may be because they are nervous or scared, the kennel environment causes them undue stress and makes your time away a nightmare for them. The alternative to a boarding kennel is to hire a
pet sitter. Pet
sitter’s experience can range from professionals with accreditation to friends or neighbors who are willing to house sit. It is more likely that your
dog will be cared for properly if you pay for
pet sitting services.
Some people opt to have a
pet sitter stop by twice a day for morning or evening feedings and walks; others want someone in the house overnight. Whichever you prefer, be sure to make clear what you want, socializing, walking, feeding, or giving medications. Be prepared to pay accordingly for additional services.
Be sure to check your
pet sitter’s references and credentials. Professional
pet sitters should be accredited by a professional organization, such as the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters or Pet Sitters International. A good
sitter will interact with your
dog and work to establish a relationship before returning when you are gone. Ask the
pet sitter to feed your
dog a few treats to establish a rapport so that he remembers her when she comes to the house.
