Guardian dogs

Written by:
Guardian dogs are bred to guard homes, people, and valuables as well as livestock. They also include the relatively gentle traditional search and rescue dogs. Saint Bernards and Newfoundlands are examples of dogs who serve as guardians over the lost and injured. Despite their large size both make excellent pets.

Rottweilers, Doberman pinschers, and mastiffs are among dogs who were bred to guard people and property. These dogs tend to be more dominant than other breeds. If one of these dogs is poorly bred , poorly socialized and untrained they could be dangerous. Your guardian dog must be very well socialized and supervised with guest if you love to entertain and thrive on having guests in your home. These dogs bond tightly with their family but can be very wary of strangers, even when trained.

The Maremma sheepdog and Great Pyrenees were bred to guard livestock rather than humans. Many are still used in these roles today, in both their countries of origin and in the U.S. These dogs make great watchdogs because they see their owners as their herds. They might overwhelm a family not experienced with dominant dogs. Guardian dogs are wonderful dogs to have if they are well trained and supervised.
