The Italian Spinone – A Prestigious and Easy-Going Dog

The Italian Spinone, otherwise known as Spinone Italiano, Italian Wire-Haired Pointing Dog or Italian Griffon, is a breed of dogs known for hunting. The breed exists since 500 B.C. Its roots are uncertain, but somehow, it managed to halt in Italy. It was originally bred as a gun dog. Nowadays, it became a versatile hunter and a prestigious companion.

The Italian Spinone is a dog with an imposing stature, but with a kind personality. This is a large breed with a strong build. It has a square shape and a muscular body. The head is large and elongated. The skull is flat on the top and the muzzle looks square when viewed from front. The stop is smooth and the nose bridge is straight. The eyes are round and expressive. The colour of the eyes can be brown, light brown or blue. The nose is big, with generous nostrils. Their colour can be brown or dark brown.

The ears are long, triangular and floppy. They are set low on the head. The eyebrows and muzzle are furnished with extra hair that makes it a bearded dog. The neck is strong and muscular and the back is straight and solid. The chest is wide and deep and the legs are long and stable. The tail is usually carried low, but most of the time it is docked at half. The webbed paws are ideal for swimming. The coat is thick, wiry and tough. It does not have a double coat. The colour of the coat can be white, white and orange, white with brown or brown. The skin and lips are red-orange.

The differences between males and females are almost unnoticeable. They all are 23.5 to 27.5 inches (60 to 70 cm) tall and they weigh 75 to 86 pounds (34 to 39 kg).

This dog masters the art of hunting. It can hunt, point and retrieve. This versatile hunter can hunt on every terrain and every climate. It obediently follows its owner and happily fulfils its duty as a tracker. It is a resistant and enjoyable dog that needs a calm owner who knows how to manage it.

This dog needs a master with pack leader skills. It does best even as a pet, because it is very docile and gentle. It is frequently used as an assistance dog for helping persons with disabilities. Generally, it loves all the children, including the stranger ones. It is suitable for the small ones as well. It knows when to be patient and obedient, but a calm tone is needed. It does not react well to harsh tone or attitude.

This intelligent dog is very loyal to its family. Early socialization and training are recommended for a healthy and cheery dog. Although it is an energetic dog, it does not need large yards or spaces. It can adapt to city life and can live in an apartment, but you must regularly exercise it.

The dog must be brushed weekly and hand stripped occasionally. The breed is very healthy and can live for about 14 years.
