The Peruvian Inca Orchid (PIO) – As Elegant and Interesting as an Orchid

The Peruvian Inca Orchid (PIO) is a curious breed of dog that will always draw your attention, no matter what. This dog is known primarily for its looks and then for its other characteristics.

This sight hound is deeply rooted in Peru and its birth will bring us back in time, before the Incas. These ancient hounds were found by Conquistadors in some caves full of orchids. This is how they got their original name. However, they are also known as the Peruvian Hairless Dog, Inca Hairless Dog and Perro Sin Pelo Del Peru, which means “dog without hair of Peru”. Although it is quite unusual to see a hairless dog, because it should be protected by its coat, its resistance is not depending on this. It seems that its aspect is suitable for the Peruvian climate. More than this, even if the PIO was used to hunt small game from time to time, its main job was to take care of people.

It seems that this dog without vestment was used as a bed warmer. However, that does not mean that its body temperature was higher, but its soft skin possesses some qualities that make it similar to a hot bottle. Also, it was believed that it has some medicinal powers and can cure muscle aches and other pains. Some of the indigenous people even consummed its meat so as to heal. It is very rare even in Peru.

Although the Peruvian Inca Orchid (PIO) is full of grace, it can be found in more than one size. It can be small - about 10 to 16 inches tall(25 - 40 cm) - , medium – 16 to 20 inches tall (40 to 40 cm) and large - 20 to 26 inches tall (50 - 65 cm). Each size can have some hair on the head, tail and toes. Its body should be lean and athletic and its curvy lines should be fine, without accentuated muscles. Its skin color can vary from gray to pink and it can be with or without spots.

This hairless dog is extremely gentle and loyal to its master. It can adapt to other mild climates and it can live even in an apartment as long as it is sufficiently exercised. It is good-natured, but its innate instinct is to hunt and run all over the place. So, make sure your kids and other pets will grow up together with these agile hounds. It does best with a loving family and human companionship.

Its grooming is minimal, but you must make sure you take care of its skin. It is very sensitive to sun rays and sunburns must be prevented. You need to use sunscreen every time you go outside with it. Despite its potential skin problems, this dog is generally healthy and it can live up to 12 years.

The Peruvian Inca Orchid (PIO) is a distinctive dog that needs a family that can be as loyal as it is.
