All You Need To Know About The Chihuahua Dog Breed

General information

Chihuahua is a well-known breed that cannot be really mistaken due to its size and specific body characteristics. Although the origins of this breed are not fully known, it is believed that their ancestors were the Techichi, a breed domesticated by the Toltec civilization (the people that conquered the Mayans). Chihuahua was worshiped, being found in ancient tombs found by archaeologists, along with their owners, obviously mummified together. He was considered a sacred dog, believed to be involved in the passage of souls in the afterlife.

For a long period of time, these dogs were considered extinct, but in the late nineteenth century, they have been rediscovered and renamed just after the state in northern Mexico where Chihuahua remnants have been found.

Currently there are two sub-breeds named Chihuahua: with long hair and with short hair. The long hair should be brushed daily to prevent tangles in the coat. It should also be known that Chihuahua has a weak spot, right in the center of the head that must be protected, otherwise there is risk of severe trauma. Chihuahua has to be protected from cold climate as well, being a small dog that cannot resist too much. These dogs are predisposed to some diseases: hydrocephalus which is manifested by the accumulation of fluid in the brain, hypoglycemia which is manifested by a severe drop in the level of blood glucose, tracheal collapse, which is a serious respiratory problem, manifested by dry coughing and airway obstruction.

Even with these predispositions, Chihuahuas have a long life, some of them reaching the age of 18 years.

Physical appearance

Chihuahua is one of the smallest breeds, having a round head, almost as an apple, and sharp ears. Whether you have a long-haired or a short-haired, the constitution of the body is the same and Chihuahua will be just as lovely in both versions. Puppies look like bigger mice, and even after growing up a bit, they still have short legs and a tiny body, apparently smaller compared with the head. They have a small muzzle that ends with a black nose, about the size of a button. Chihuahua has dark, dark brown or black eyes, very big compared with the head, and always expressing a gentle look. Their coat has many colors; in Mexico for example, black, brown or black and white Chihuahuas are most appreciated, while in the United States, solid and compact colors are favored. Both males and females of this breed have a maximum height of 23 centimeters and a maximum weight of 3 kg.

Social environment and life style

As small as it is, Chihuahua is an active dog, who likes to be the center of attention. He likes to interact with other Chihuahuas, but is not very friendly to other breeds. He is a devoted pet, but often very possessive and jealous. He would not hesitate a moment to defend his territory. Chihuahua is perfect for individuals or families without small children (small children tend to be too brutal for such small pets).
