The Aryan Molossus
Once a Warrior, Today a Loyal Companion and a Family-Protector
Should you ever decide that you need a big dog, with an imposing posture, which can look threatening and majestic at the same time, the Aryan Molossus is definitely one breed that you must take into consideration.
The Armant
The Egyptian Dog with a Lot of Love to Give
To some of you, the Armant is better known as the “Egyptian Sheepdog” and, just as the name suggests it, it was bred to be a herding dog. However, in ancient times, it was used mostly as a guard dog. This breed is originally from Egypt and named after the town of Armant. Its loyalty and agility are the two main characteristics which make this dog special.
The Atlas Terrier
The Small Dog With a Massive Dose of Energy
At a glimpse, the Atlas Terrier can be easily mistaken with the Jack Russell Terrier. However, there are some differences that may help you tell these two cousins apart. Before deciding to buy or adopt a dog of this breed, there are some things that you have to take into consideration. Unfortunately, this is quite a rare breed of dogs in our days.
Anglos-Francaises de Petite Venerie
It Is Impossible Not to Love Them
Anglos-Francaises de Petite Venerie are the smallest dogs in the Anglos-Francais category. However, the name „Petite”, meaning „small”, is not at all referring to the size of the dogs, but to the game they are after. Even if they've been around since the 16th century, today, these dogs are not easy to find. So if you have decided to adopt one, you can be sure that you will have a unique pet.

So much has happened since we opened our doors in November of 2004. We have sucessfully completed our first year as Stray Hearts Animal Shelter and we couldn't be more proud of our accomplishments! In 12 short months, we turned this facility into a working and effective animal shelter for dogs and cats in our community. We took in over 850 dogs and over 250 cats in our first 12 months of being opened. The real beauty of those numbers is how many of those animals were rehabilitated and adopted to loving homes. Our placement/transfer rate is in the 98% range. There is no way for us to thank all the people in this community who have pitched in with time, money and resources to insure our success. But rest assured, we are thankful, and the residents of our shelter are thankful.
In this, our 2nd year of being, many changes will continue to be made as we grow, and many of the policieis and procedures which have helped us succeed will remain in place. Though we have now graduated to manageing our own donations, we will continue to make our financial records open for public review. Our euthenasia policy will remain the same, following the National Definition of a "low- kill" shelter, which means we do not put down animals for the sake of making space, and we do everything possible to rehabilitate and find homes for all companion animals. This year we hope to create stronger spay & neuter programs. Our staff and volunteers are being trained with various techniques for training and rehabilitiating dogs to render them more adoptable, and we plan to create a certification program for humane education for teachers in the local schools.
As we continue to grow and evolve, Stray Hearts Animal Shelter of Taos will not only be a shelter for abandoned animals, but a community facility for many animal related programs and education opportunities. Gardens, walking paths, public training classes, agility courses and much more are in our future...
