Raleigh County's first Humane Society was founded in 1950 by a group of concerned citizens who were appalled at the conditions of the county "pound". Led by the late Mrs. William Dick, Jr., the group devoted itself to improving the care received by stray animals. However, over the next twenty years this society became inactive.
In 1979, under the leadership of Walter Massey, the former editor of The Beckley Post-Herald, the present Humane Society Inc. was formed. A new state-of-the-art building was completed in April, 1992, thanks to a $500,000 bequest from the estate of Kathleen French Kepler. The late Miss Kepler was one of several charter board members who not only helped to reorganize the present society but actually worked at the old shelter with other charter members and volunteers on a daily basis.
