The Animal Welfare Society, located in West Kennebunk, Maine, is a private, non-profit humane society formed in the early 1960's by a group of caring individuals. The founders included the late Mrs. Elmina B. Sewall and the late Mr. Donald Shephard who served as the Society's first President of the Board of Directors. In 1967, the Society became incorporated and has now expanded to a shelter of over 13,000 square feet. Our service area for adoptions and other services extends throughout Southern Maine. We provide municipal shelter services to 18 communities representing a population of nearly 150,000 persons.

Numerous expansions have been made, all due in great part to the generosity of Mrs. Elmina B. Sewall. Visit our shelter at our Virtual Tour.

As our mission statement reads: "The Animal Welfare Society exists to provide humane shelter and care to animals temporarily in need of housing, and to further the cause of responsible animal adoption and ownership through education and public awareness. The society actively promotes kindness, the elimination of cruelty and neglect to all animals, and the lifelong commitment of people to their pets."

We accomplish these goals through the generosity of concerned citizens who contribute to our non-profit society through donations, pledges, membership and bequests. These funds go directly to the care of the animals and the many other programs we offer to the people and animals of our communities.

For more information about the Society, contact the Executive Director at (207)985-3244 ext 106 or send mail to awsedr@animalwelfaresociety.org.
