In 1977, a small group of people got together to improve the odds for homeless and unwanted dogs and cats. They called themselves the Bellingham Humane Society, and they offered just one service. By telephone and by word of mouth they worked to find new guardians for homeless cats and dogs.
The Bellingham Humane Society grew to become the Alternative Humane Society, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, registered with the State of Washington. We are an all volunteer organization that provides spay/neuter assistance and operates a foster home/adoption program for dogs and cats.
What makes our organization unique is our commitment to the animals. That means that when we are able to take a homeless animal into our program, we feed that animal, shelter it, pay for the vet bills, the shots, and any illness that may develop until we find that animal a home, whether it takes three days or three years.
That's a big commitment. We receive no government funding and are supported solely by donations from the public and business, and sporadic grants. Your support and/or donations help us continue our work.
With your help we will continue to help spay and neuter more dogs and cats and give more animals a much deserved second chance!
