The Irish Staffordshire Bull Terrier A Wonderful Dog Waiting to Receive Your Love

As the name suggests, the Irish Staffordshire Bull Terrier breed is very much related to the bull terrier, being similar to the American Staffordshire terrier and American pit bull terrier. It is a very popular English breed, whose ancestors were used in dog fighting.

The dogs of this breed have a muscular body and a broad head with very pronounced cheek muscles and strong jaws. They are medium-sized dogs, measuring between 36 and 42 cm (14 to 17 in) at the withers. Males can weigh between 14 to 18 kg (31 to 40 lb), while females weigh 11 to 15.4 kg (24 to 34 lb).

They have a smooth and short coat that may come in various colors: red, fawn, white, black or blue, or any combination of one of these colors and white, but also in shades of brindle with or without white color.

They are very active, intelligent dogs which distinguish themselves by their fearlessness and loyalty to their owners. Contrary to many beliefs, they may be very affectionate to humans and loving to their family, especially with children. They are friendly dogs that like expressing their affection and showing off their clownish personality by any means. If you prefer reserved and quiet dogs, this may not be the most appropriate breed for you.

They get along with other dogs, being always ready to play. With proper socialization from puppyhood, they can also interact well with other pets.

Irish Staffies are strong, athletic dogs with a great amount of energy. They need physical and mental exercise, in order to avoid becoming destructive or stubborn. Firm, consistent training and an experienced handling are necessary to prevent bad behaviors. They suit best an active family that can, at least, take them on daily walks. They can adapt to life in an apartment, but a small yard would be better. They are good in dog sports, like agility, competitive obedience and jumping. They can jump very high, so, if kept unleashed in a fenced area, they may even jump a fence that is seven feet high.

Their life expectancy is between 10 and 16 years. Staffordshire Bull Terriers may suffer from cataracts or from a metabolic disorder with symptoms similar to dementia. The incidence of mast cell tumors is greater among this breed and they are also susceptible to mange.

The coat does not require much grooming. A daily firm brush will do the job. Bathing should be done only when necessary.

There is a big heart hidden behind the intimidating appearance of an Irish Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Staffies are wonderful dogs that with proper training and proper care can make great companions. Unfortunately, their eagerness to please is misused by some of their owners who train the dogs to become aggressive. This aggressiveness and the bull terrier appearance have made the Staffordshire Bull Terrier subject to breed-specific legislation in various countries. Under the guidance of an experienced handler, the Irish Staffordshire Bull Terrier can become a great family pet.
