Pet Tips
Using a muzzle
If you don’t have a muzzle, and you need to immobilize your dog’s mouth because of an injury, make one out of a strip of cloth, rope, necktie, gauze, or a nylon stocking—anything you can find that is around two feet in length. Wrap it over the top of the dog’s nose, firmly, but not too tight. Cross the two ends under the dog’s chin, and tie them behind his ears. Be careful and do not interrupt breathing by covering the nostrils. Loosen the muzzle to allow him to pant periodically.
If the dog is having difficulty breathing or is vomiting, remove the muzzle. In case you need to do so quickly, keep some scissors handy.
