We were the lucky family who rescued two wonderful puppies 15 years ago, they were litter mates and unwanted. We were heartbroken to have to put one asleep this week. My question is should I try to find a companion for her sister or not get another dog until we lose her also. They have never really been around any other dogs and I am unsure if the remaining dog would welcome a newcomer. Maybe I am being selfish wanted to find another pet who needs a good home. Thanks!
I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Many times the senior dogs do better without another companion. Other times they mourn the loss of their companion that another older dog helps ease their pain a little. It all depends on the dog and only you would know if another mate would help her or not. There are so many unwanted dogs in shelters and in the rescues that you can help. It's only been a week so I know the loss is still so painful for you all. I would wait awhile and see how the remaining dog does by herself. Bringing in a puppy, instead of an older dog, at this point might not be a good idea. Think of being in your 80's and having to deal with a 2 yr old yourself. Maybe the older dog would rather just spend her remaining time snuggling with you all and enjoying her last years alone.
