we have a 7 year old male cat named woolie. here recently he has began to lose alot of wieght. we are on a fixed income and can not afford to take him to the vet . we did call the appalachian animal hospital and told them his symptoms he eats well but vomits and has diaheria and lost so much wieght in the last 2 weeks you can feel every bone in his body and whats worse you can see then as well. they told us that he could have a urinairy trac infection or feline luekemia. he is a very important part of this family and we all love him dearly the problem is it will cost $135 to take and have blood work done to find out witch of the two he has and they wont take payments so my ? is are there any programs or orginizeations that could help us find out what has our little boy so sick ? if you have any ideas please let us know we are at our wits end

I'm sorry about your cat, but I sincerely hope you won't take on any more pets that you can't afford to care for. Your cat may have died of neglect.

I am very sorry about your loss. I am also very sorry for the comment another poster made about not getting another pet and also you contributing to your cats death.

Feline Luekemia is a common disease among cats and I've not found any information regarding prevention.
My Cat Abbie contracted the disease somehow and she is an indoor cat and wasn't exposed to any other cats.
The vets offered a treatment at the cost of 2 grand. She had suffered with Epilepsy and was also exposed to the poisoned food that was on the market last year and it damaged her kidneys. I gave her all the love and care I could have possible given her at had to put her down at the age of only 12 years old. How she contracted the virus, I haven't a clue. It doesn't matter how much money we have, we can't always prevent our furbabies from getting sick.

I'm sorry you didn't have the money to take the cat to the vet, chanses are he would have died anyway. I am certain you gave your furbaby the best life he could have had, and as I said I am sorry for your loss.
I'm also sorry, you can to this board for comfort and you had to see the comment another poster made. It was extremely crewl and uncalled for. May you be comforted by good people with compassion for your loss during this difficult time.

But pet owners need to reasonably be able to take their cats to the vet. This person could not. In the overall scheme of things, $135 is nothing. The cat suffered from lack of care. This person should not get another cat. Ever.

I had a leukemia cat who lived until 12 years old with proper vet care.

Feline leukemia is very preventable, in the form of a vaccine!!!!!  However, if a cat contracts the virus, there is no cure for it.  It can lay dormant for many years with the cat showing no symptoms.   If someone can afford internet service, then I think their animal deserves some basic veterinary care.

But what is so sad in the case of the woman who posted, the cat may not have had feline leukemia. The cat may have had a virus or infection that was easily treatable. And even it was FeLV, an infection can still be treated. I had a cat with FeLv who developed a serious URI that was treated and she came through just fine. People should not take on pets they can't afford to care for.  and
