Hey girl I completely know what you are talking about. They don't know because they have not lived in the country. I have and completely understand. Just lie or there may be stray animals in your area that you could take in. I know people think that if you don't have a fenced in yard that they will stray and get killed. They don't know that with that much acerage you can afford to let the dogs/cats roam without incident

I find many of the restrictions placed on potential adopters to be silly. I also find it insane that many of the mutts at our local shelters run about $200-300. I never am shocked when people decide to buy a dog from a BYB or a pet store when they give up after being turned down for miniscule reasons. Here it is an either a race to get an application in on a dog or impossible to pass a rescue's requirements. You would think that a person with dog experience and lots of knowledge would be a good home-but the geshtapo would rather you be a blank slate so they can indoctrinate their adopters into their little world of right and wrong. I think a lot of this problem is based on Rescue and Shelter workers Ego.

Wow, where do I start. I think I'll start with the comment that God made all dogs to be outside. Hate to tell you this but God didn't make most of the breeds of dogs you see these days. Man did. Man took different breeds of dogs to make yet another breed. I wish you could see the old Golden Retriever my neighbor keeps outside 24/7. Younger dogs may have thicker coats and can tolerate the weather better but as they age they have a harder time dealing with the heat and the cold. Indiana gets bitter cold some winters and will sometimes get a lot of snowfall. How nice that you provide shelter for them squished under a deck. How cozy. If they're kept outside they should have a nice sturdy doghouse with fresh straw for a base. Then you should have some type of warming device in there for those days and nights it gets way below zero with strong winds. Yup, they are dogs as you stated. And that's how you look at them....as just a plain ole dog. God did make certain animals to live outside. And even the animals with thick hides need shelter in the winter. Again, someone stated that all dogs started out wild. And again I will say that no, not ALL dogs started out wild. Sorry, I can't imagine a bulldog, or many other breeds, living out in the wild and surviving. And even the wolves and coyotes can't survive in the wild without proper shelter. It's a shame you purchased puppies and tossed them outside with the heat of the summer just starting. Hopefully you keep up with their vaccinations, heartworm medication, and flea/tick prevention. You see, I take in hospice dogs that "so called" great owners got tired of when they got old and sick. And these "great owners" just dumped onto the street or into a shelter. I wish all of you who think it's great to have dogs just to dump outside to live (wish you'd explain to me why you bother to get an animal when all you do is feed and water them when you think about it) outside for their entire life could come here and hold each dog while they shake with seizures. Wish you could come here and hold each precious dog in your arms as the vet administers the medication to put them to sleep. And again, I wish you could come here and see this golden retriever sit at the fence, covered in snow, waiting for me to toss him some hotdogs or a nice bone to chew on. I wish you could see him saunter around when it's 110 with 90% humidity outside. I do believe that there are some dogs that do prefer to be outside. I don't believe that Labs have the proper coats to endure the cold Indiana winters. And I don't believe that some straw tossed under a deck is proper housing for them. But they're your dogs and do what you will with them. But don't condemn a shelter for not wanting you for an adoptee. Sometimes it's better to euthanize a dog rather than having them endure years of torture.

We had a couple of dogs when I was growing up, one a Siberian Husky and one a mixed breed that just showed up at our house. Even in the middle of winter, when they were inside, they would rather be outside. Eventually my parents found heated beds and water dishes for them. The dogs chose where they wanted to sleep, we made it as safe for them as we could. We didn't keep them inside to ease our conscience or keep them with us for our comfort without regard for theirs. In my family our pets truly are family. We love them and accept them for who they are, care for them and don't try to force our ideas on their needs. I work with a family who's very loved indoor dog used to love to go outside and run away. When he died of seizures they were uncertain what caused them. The family was torn up. They thought that if they'd just chained him up every time he was outside, maybe he wouldn't have died. I told them what I thought. That if they'd chained their dog up and only let him off a leash when he was in the house he wouldn't have been the loving animal he was because he would have been unhappy. I'm not saying a pet should only stay outside, I'm saying that all pets are different. All our animals have been indoor/outdoor. Because we live off a busy road our dogs that would run away and chase cars were kept in a pen when outside. But we have a dog now that lives inside and goes out whenever she wants off a chain, out of a pen to run. We also have cats that are indoor outdoor. Again, we let them choose. My parents try to have all the cats in when coyotes are running around, but we don't force them to only be indoor cats. The cats that aren't still alive lived to ten years or older. We recently lost a cat that was 16. So, please, stop making rules that work for you, stop denying animals homes because you are too stubborn to admit your way isn't the only way. You're right, some animals are happier indoors, some are happier outdoors. Stop worrying about yourself and how it looks and start worrying about your pets.
