Is it normal for a cat to have convulsions during euthanasia?

I don't know about cats as I work with rodents but rats and mice often seem to have convulsions. When I asked the vet about it she said it was more of a muscle relaxation than convulsion. The animal is unconsious at that point and it lasts a few seconds. Hope this may be of some help.

Diabetes in cats is a treatable condition. It is not a reason for euthanasia. How was the cat diagnosed? Was treatment offered at that time? If money is an issue, perhaps you can work something out with the veterinarian.

Just to comment...I had 2 cats that both had diabetes for over 12 years. My cat Sammy died in 2003 at the age of 16 and last year my cat Sadie died at the age of 19. They had regular visits to the vet and I was careful about their diet. They had prescription food. We tried medication with pills at first but it really did not work as well. Then the vets said I could try to give shots. I cringed at the thought of it but after the first couple of days I was a pro at it. I had trouble finding the right dosage at first for their insulin but after a couple of months they were regulated. The cost was not bad for the insulin and the syringes. A bottle of insulin will cost about 25.00 dolars and will last about 3 - 6 months. The syrines are about the same price and will last you about 1-2 months. I checked their urine periodically and made sure they were in guidelines. I worked closely with my vet...who was very understanding about the costs involved when caring for a pet in this situation. If you are careful you can find some great vets who believe in non-invasive treatments and careful monitoring who will actually save you money and still give great care to your cats. It will take time but don't be frustrated. Your love and care will be worth it in the long run. I've never regretted how I cared for my cats. I also know that they loved me for the lives they had. So don't give up on those sick pets as they will never give up on you. It's unconditional love. My new cats were all rescued cats. I have 3. One is blind in one eye, one has upper respritory problems and she will have them for her whole life. One is still getting adjusting to the attention she gets. Someone left her in an apartment with close to 2 weeks without food or water. There was not much left to her when we took her home. She is doing great now. Best of luck to all who have pets with medical issues.

It makes me feel so happy to hear stories like yours where someone has cared enough to rescue an animal and provide a lvoing environment. My cats are rescue cats also (I have 3) and I love them dearly! Rescue animals make wonderful pets!

I question your commitment to your cat, since you refer to the poor thing as "it."

Some of you righteous idiots need to stop bashing putting a pet to sleep and look at the feelings of the pet and the owner. These poor animals don't understand what is happening to them. When I see an animal suffer, it breaks my heart, but it seems like some of you are so against putting an animal down, that you completely ignore the pain and feelings of, not the animal, but the owner to. My cat was just diagnosed with advanced kidney failure. He's lost almost all of his weight, he urinates and poops everywhere, he vomits constantly, and he's dehydrated. Now, he has to live in the basement. This cat has been with me for 15 years, through being a bachelor, moving 6 times, getting married, have two kids, and getting another cat. He's been a best friend through all of those changes, and not once did he ever act up or stop running to see me whenever I came home. I will not let him wither away to nothing in the basement. I love him too much for that!

Yesterday I had the most difficult choice of putting my cat down. My heart is so broken that I can't function. I love that cat more than anything in the world. We rescued her and she was so glad to have people to love her. She was THE BEST> She called me MAMMA, and would be able to communicate with us, through actions and meows. It was the hardest decision I had to make and still can't believe she is not here. I know I have to accept this but am having a really hard time. DOes anyone have any suggestions? I know this takes time.
