Have you had any experience with rescue dog adoption groups? My husband & I are older (late 50's) & now empty-nesters looking to rescue a dog, preferably a lab, goldenretreive ror mix of both. We have submitted applications to 2 rescue groups a week ago with no response to date. I understand that volunteers comprise the main number of people involved in rescuing a dog, fostering it and finding a home. Could anyone give me your experience with length of time for the applcation to be acted-on? what experiences have you had (good or bad) with adopting a rescue dog that youcould share with others?  Thanks.

Sometimes it does take awhile for the person to filter through the applications and finally get back to you.  Some don't bother to contact you if you've been denied for some reason.  Right now, with the hurricane bearing down in the gulf, many are working hard trying to help the rescues in that area.  Could be why you're getting such a slow response.
I've gotten a few dogs through a rescue.  Because I know the people, it was easier and faster for me to adopt.
Sometimes the rescues are so overwhelmed with animals that they're not cared for as well as they should be.  Some are so in debt with vet bills that they hold off taking the rescues in to be checked over and medicated.
Some have medical issues that are missed because the fosters have so many rescues in their homes.  And then those medical issues are pushed off on the adopting families to pay for.
This is my experience and I can't say that all rescues work in this fashion.
Check the shelters in your area.  Many have online websites that you can browse through.
A lot of the rescues get their dogs from the same shelters and make you pay a lot more to adopt than it would for you to just adopt from the shelter.   A good shelter and a good rescue will have the dog spayed or neutered before it's allowed to come to your home.  And all will make sure that the vaccinations are all up to date.
