My fiances little brother who is fifteen has a mixed breed dog named Chubs. Chubs is on a five foot chain everyday and never gets to come off the chain to run or anything. The brotheer has this dog chain about a hundred feet from the house in the pasture. He does not take care of this dog. I have repeatedly gone out there and this dog had no water/food. Today was my last straw. I went to go out back and the dog has no water and looks as if it hasn't eaten in a week or two. I fed him, watered him and let him off the chain. what can I do to get this boy to understand the responsibility of having this dog? Or should I take the dog and find him a better home although the parents would disagree?

My opinion would be to find a new, caring home for the dog. I had to save a pitbull pup once from a family member, this poor baby was on a chain and had been fed and water everyday but she was having to fight with racoons and such to keep her food. Needless to say she lost that fight on many occasions apparently, she was skin and bones when I got to her. First thing I did was schedule a vet appointment for her 2 days later. The following day the animal services for our county (alachua) sited me for inhuman treatment of an animal, this after I'm trying to save her life. My vet wrote the shelter and explained the situation and the "charges" were dropped. Well, I got her the vet attention and was going to keep her but I had 3 other pitbulls at the time to take care of and she just couldn't be fed around the other dogs so I found her a wonderful home and she thrived!!! She is doing great!! (I need to add that when the shelter sited me they did NOT take the dog). It sounds to me like this person has a lot of growing up and learning to do before they can take on the responsibility of an animal, the poor dog doesn't deserve to wait. My county has a new law now that prohibits dogs from being place on a chain more than a set number of hours a day, you may want to look into that. Also, a runner would be a better choice, if you have too. I don't understand why the parents are allowing this?? My two cents worth is to give the dog a better home....
