Hi. My friends dog barks, growls (at himself) and chews his backfoot when he gets anxious, upset or does not get his way. Sound aversion, or attempting to pull him off of himself just causes him to escalate. Some of his tantrums cause him to draw blood. Any suggestions on things to try would be great.
This is a serious behavior problem. There are many questions that could be asked, such as: 1) Is this animal getting enough exercise? Most breeds, some more than others require a good amount of exercise, which means actually going out for long walks 2x a day and not just around the block for ten or fifteen minutes. Exercise works out aggression and anxiety. 2) Is this animal being mistreated in some way? This animal may be ill and should see the veterinarian to rule out a possible underlying medical issue!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Remember, dogs react to situations that surround them in their environment and do not act out on purpose to be annoying. The problem is probably in the home. The owners need to work this out before the dog harms himself or escalates to hurting someone or something else within their vicinity. Consult a professional dog trainer if all else fails.
