Saddening Stigma - 2/28/2008 10:17:17 AM

The reality that i have discovered in my years of working with animals is dogs react in kind to how they are treated.  I have discovered recently that there is a terrible stigma on dogs with breeds such as Pitbull, Rottwieller, and doberman. The sad thing is that these breeds of dogs are no more likely to be violent than any other unless they are trained as such. i feel that it is important to remind people that even your little poodle can become aggressive and mean if she is treated in such a manner.  I urge everyone to Stop the stigma and violence, please if you know of anyone who is hurting their dog whether small or large be the bigger person and stop the abuse. thank you, (this was written on behalf of TWEAK the best pitt in the world, thil somone used drugs to make him mean)

I totally agree..... like no child is born bad, no animal is born aggressive!  It is a learned behavior.

I have to disagree with you.   Years ago I adopted a female doberman from doberman rescue.  Wonderful girl she was!  Great with my kids and an all around wonderful loving pet.
About 2 years after getting our 9 month old Heather, we decided to get a male doberman.  Found someone in town that was selling a litter so I drove to check them out.  Came home with a nice size little boy.
Was raised in our home with my 3 small children.
Having 3 kids, we had kids and adults coming in and out of our home all day long.  No "guard dog" training for any of my dogs.  Just household pets.  I have never let any of my kids hurt or abuse any animal we've had in our home.
If a salesman would come to the yard, he would stand at guard.  No growling but the stance he had made strangers stay back.
My lady friend would come over all the time to visit.  Her husband was in a garage band so he wasn't around much.
One night he came to the house for some reason.  Called out to him to come on in.  That is when Duke decided that he didn't know this man and this man shouldn't be in his house.  Stood in the guard stance and did a low growl.
About 3 months after that my youngest son went to hug Duke.  Heard a quick noise and then heard my son crying.
He had a small punture wound on one temple and a very small scratch on the opposite side of his head.
Within a week that dog was given to the IL State Police Dept.  He was then trained by professionals to be a personal guard dog.

I have never ever trained any of my dogs to guard my house.  I have had dogs almost all my adult life and have never ever had a dog like that before.  Nor have I had one since.

Read the newspapers and see how many unprovoked dog attacks there are.  In a lot of these cases these dogs were someone's loving pet.

I agree with you 110%
If everyone would give Pitbulls a chance, and realize that Pitbulls are whatever their OWNER wants them to be! Vicious killer, or devoted family companion.
Pitbulls are so sweet, and they do not deserve the abuse, neglect, stereotyping. What they do deserve is a chance, and a good loving home!
