Recurring vomiting - 6/2/2008 8:49:54 PM

My one year old maltipoo has been consistently vomiting about once a week.  I go to bed around 11pm and he always vomits between 2 and 4 am.  He beings heaving before vomiting.  I spoke to my vet about it a few months ago after he began vomiting bile nearly 4 times a day for a couple days.  They told me to starve him for 24 hours and to change his food.  Since then I've been feeding him California Natural Lamb and Rice.  I was told that it is about as mild a dog food as you can get.  After changing he did get better but then he began the vomiting once a week while in bed.  The consistency is always the same.  It is a small mound of partially digested food.  It is almost always the same amount too.  After vomiting he seems fine and goes right back to sleep.  To air on the side of caution I've taken away anything I can think of that might upset his stomach.  I don't give him rawhides, bones or anything like that.  He only has plastic balls and stuffed animals.  He is always on a leash when I take him out and doesn't play with strange dogs.  I keep a pretty tight reign on him.  I know everyone says that dogs just vomit every now and then.  But I worry that it is something else.  Why is it so consistent?  If anyone can help me figure this out I would really appreciate it.
Thank you!!

Could be a food allergy.  Many dogs are allergic to beef, chicken, fish, and sometimes lamb.
I'm not a big Science Diet fan but I think they do have a food for digestive problems.  You could also try figuring out what exactly is causing the belly upsets.

What time of night are you feeding him?  Are you feeding him twice a day?  How much food are you feeding him?
I'm not familiar with maltipoo's.  I have pugs here that are around 20-24 lbs.  I feed them 1/4 cup of dry kibble mixed with some canned pumpkin and some green beans in the morning.  Then I feed them 1/4 cup of just dry kibble at night.

If you are feeding him too much, too late at night, it's probably upsetting his belly and that's why he's puking during the evening hours.

Merrick makes a great food and has different varieties available.  Other good brands do the same.
Try feeding food with chicken.  Then try beef.  Then try fish.    Timberwolf makes a great anchovy type food that dogs love.

I have a maltipoo as well.  She has had digestive problems for the entire fourteen weeks of her life.  I had her on Science Diet as recommended by my vet.  My puppy doesn't vomit but has lots of loose stools.  She alternates between loose and constipation sometimes in the same bowel movement.  I began grasping at straws and changed her food to Little Ceasars.  This stopped the loose stools.  She became painfully constipated and her anal glands became filled from not enough fiber.  I am now trying Rachel Ray's Nutrish dog food.  It doesn't have corn listed in the main ingredients.  I read that corn and other fillers found in most dog food is very hard for dogs to digest.  The Nutrish lists chicken as a main ingredient.  You might want to try changing her from that Science Diet.  I think it is harsh for this breed of dog.
