A week ago my mother and son and I were taking a walk in evening and as usual our dogs came along with us. We live in rural Oklahoma where almost everyone who lives near us has at least one dog and no one has fences. So the dogs wander around visiting each other and marking their territories, the only time a dog is in a fence or chained is if the dog might be aggressive.
We reached the front of our house and my 3 y/o son's puppy, a little rat terrier, was marking his territory on my neighbor's tree when something scared him and he starting running back towards us, it was at this time that my neighbor decided to try and shoot my son's dog, and shot right in our direction, toward My 3 year old son in his stroller. After making sure everyone was ok, I completely lost it, screamed everything under the sun at this idiot. He claimed he didn't see us with 3 flashlights on the stroller, a head lamp on my son's head, and my mother and I both having our own flashlights. I advised him (and everyone living within 3 miles) t how completely idiotic it is to shoot a gun in any general direction of a house not to mention MY SON and mother and I, (omitting the colorful words he made me use in front of my son!!!) and even if it wasn't in our general direction, WAS HE PLANNING ON SHOOTING MY SON's DOG RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM??? Then I called the police.
I told the officers they had lived there for 8 or 9 years and right after they moved in they threw a fit about my parents chihuahua and lab going into their yard, I guess they didn't have a problem with the other 15 dogs in the neighborhood. My dad's answer was to tell them they were now living in the country and if they had a problem with animals coming into their yard to put up a fence. I moved back home and brought my min pin and my son got his puppy for christmas. My min pin can be yappy and she and the rat terrier chases cars and bark at everyone. I understand they can be annoying. The officers came back and spoke to me after they spoke to him, and they told me that they told him that he cannot shoot towards anything even though we are outside the city limits because of the houses nearby and that was it. Now when he is leaving or coming home and I happen to be outside he makes a gun with his hand and points it at my dog.
Can anyone advise me on the animal laws in Oklahoma, or perhaps where I could find information on them? Especially outside the city limits, I don't know the laws or if he could legally kill my dog just because he is walking through his yard to visit the other puppy on the next street over.
Any advise or information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
