Firstly, what a great resource this web site is!!
I have a quick question I was hoping someone could help me with. What is the most popular dog ending up at dog shelter?

I am in a rural area in Kentucky. I would say the most popular dog in our shelter is labradors or labrador mixes. When I first started, we would get lab purebreds in and I naively thought they would get adopted in no time. I soon realized labs and lab mixes were a dime a dozen in this area. And certainly no one wants a black dog!!! I myself own a half lab/half ? mix and she is black and I wouldn't get rid of her for anything! The second most popular is beagles and coonhounds. I hear how expensive they are and what great lineage, but for some reason they aren't claimed. I wish more people would use ID of some sort. Maybe they just don't want their dogs back.... I also wish there were more cat rescues, that were actually not full!

Whatever dog is "popular" that year.
Right now I think it's pitbulls, puggles, and lab mixes.
Pitbulls because people want a "tough" dog because they're "tough" people. Then they find out that the breed is a bit tougher than they thought and the laws, with owning one, are so tough that instead of finding a rescue or euthanizing the dog, they dump them on someone elses lap to deal with.
Puggles because people think these dogs are some type of "designer" dog. Hey everyone, any mixed breed is a M.U.T.T. Idiots are paying top bucks for these "designer" dogs that people used to give away free.
Then they can't handle the hyperness or the loud barking of their expensive mutt so they dump them into a shelter so someone else can deal with their problem.
Lab mixes because people want to make money by breeding their dog to make some type of "designer" breed. Not realizing that they can have up to 12 puppies in one litter. Hard to sell 12 mutt puppies. So they dump them into a shelter and let others deal with their stupidity.
