My sister put her two cat to sleep without looking for a shelter to take them to. They were both 8, brother and sister, Healthy and well behaved. I can't find any solice in the fact that these cats are gone just because her daughter was allergic to them. My question is, if my sister had taken them to a shelter they would have had a good chance of adoption, right? I am only questioning this because this evening after she called me to tell me (after the fact,) I went looking for shelters that take in pets, to my suprize I could only find information about adoption of rescued animals. I always ****umed that shelters took animals that people couldn't care for anymore, not just one's that had been abuse or neglacted. This makes me wonder, is there a huge gap in the system for animals who's owners can't care for them any longer? Is it just not talked about on the websites, if so how would I go about finding a place for unwanted pets? I never want to be caught off gaurd again. Maybe if I had thought about it before I could have spread the mesage about what to do.

You are right...its not okay! I dont have an answer to your question, but I myself am concerned with the amount of animals that just get dumped off in our neghborhood and strays just running around! Some are not just strays, but pets that people just let run whereever they want! In my opinion this is serious neglect. And if peopel cann olonger take care of their pet, they should at least give it a chance in the pound. I cant beleive she just straight up euthanized it. What a waste. Unfortunately it is a huge problem.People take on animals when they have no right to. Irresponsible idiots if you ask me.

I work in an animal shelter myself, and the reason why we generally not take in animals from owners who want to get rid of their pet is mainly because of capacity problems. There are so many homeless animals which have to be taken care of, and they have no one to take care of their interests. Animals in homes, who have to be replaced, have an owner which have taken on the responsibility of that animal, and the owner should try to find a new home on their own. At least he or she have only a small amount of animals to find a new home to, while we have hundreds; so a generally well functioning person should have no problem finding a new home on their own.

The Humane Society takes in animals.  So do most all no-kill shelters.  As a very very last resort the county animal control facility will take them but it's a guranteed euthanasia if you take it there.  I'm sorry but your sister sounds horribly selfish to me.  She should have at least posted free ads like on craigslist.org, put up some flyers, made some calls, etc to find these wonderful kitties a home.  Not only that, but people with allergies CAN have pets if they give the animal a bath with special allergy shampoos, keep the rugs, blankets and dust collecting things in the house clean.

I just can't fathom having 2 cats for 8 years and just killing them like that.  She should never have any animals again if she thinks of them as being so disposable.  Disgusting.

I agree with the comment that your sister is incredibly selfish and doesn't deserve any more pets. She sounds like a very cold, uncaring person, and I feel sorry for her.
