I am so disgusted with the sunnyslope facility that i will not go back there. Ever. My boyfriend and I went there we found an adorable dog (who shall remain nameless....) We decided she would make a nice addition to our home.  We took our dog in for a meet and greet and everything went well.  As we were going in to fill out the application the young women at the desk asked us who we were adopting.  As soon as we told her, her whole tone changed and she started grilling us on how we live our lives how the meet & greet went and you could tell she was not happy about this news.  She started asking invasive questions and telling us how this might not work. Since she couldn't discourage us from taking this dog she decided that we would do the meet and greet again. She wasn't there the first time and she "wasn't comfortable with this adoption."

We agreed. Why not let them show her every thing was fine, and everything was fine the two of them got along well.  The "nameless" dog was very sweet she ran over to greet us. Our dog is an alpha dog. We knew this and that is why we chose a submissive female for the companion. As the the dogs got to know each other there was a little snipping as would be expected as dominance is established. Not fighting, growling, bitting or anything else. Just some snipping.  The young women latched onto this as her last best excuse to keep us from saving..i mean adopting a sweet young dog. As she jumped all over what little snipping was going on I tried to explain that our dog was an alpha and that is why we chose a submissive female. She immediately reprimanded me about her extensive behavioral training and her extensive experience and basically that i knew nothing not just about dogs but about my own dog. At this point it was obvious that she did not want us to take the dog and we were not happy being treated like children particularly by a person not far removed from being a child.

After discussing the situation with a supervisor and her discusions with the employees that did the first meet and greet the suporvisor said we could take the dog. But at this point what should have been fun was turned into something exuasting and humiliating and we just chose to leave.

In short this young women was obviously attached to the dog, was hyper critical of anyone wanting to adopt her and caused that dog to remain in the shelter waiting for a good home that may never come.

HORRIBLE!!!  I had a simmilar experience at the Humane Society in Erie, PA about 2 years ago.  Long story short, they completely misrepresented their policies (hand picking new owners that they knew, or were friends with) and my fiencee and I were turned down for an adoption.  We own our 4 bedroom home, have a yard and no children, and yet we were less fit parents for a German Shepherd puppy than a teenage girl and her boyfriend.  I know that she was a teenager because they had her call her mom and ask permission for the adoption, and she spoke of the boy as her boyfriend.  My advice (and what we did) find any other kind of shelter and be their biggest fan.  I found a local shelter here that treated me like a human, and I took my Dalmatian adoptee home the same day.  Now I volunteer there 4 days a week and love every minute of it.  I tell everyone I know to adopt from there and leave the HS to fend for themselves!  I am sorry to hear about your experience, but know.... there is somewhere better out there to adopt!

I also had a absolutely terrible experience at the shelter here in New Albany IN. For the past month or so we have made 6 trips to the shelter looking for a dog/puppy for my 14 yr old son. On the 6th trip, he fell in love with a black lab puppy. After deciding that this was the "perfect" dog for him we filled out the application, and that is when we were told that we couldn't have ANY dog because it was going to live outside with our other dog and cat. We live in the country and have 58 acres and they feel that a dog would rather live in a 1800 sq ft house than have 58 acres to run on. They actually told me that it was CRUEL to have dogs outside. I have had many dogs over the years mostly "bird dogs" and none of them would even want to be in the house. So now my son had his heart broke and this poor puppy is without a home. This is something they should have told us the FIRST time we went in there, not after we got attached to the animal. They claim to be experts, but the actions of the employees while we were at the shelter prove they are very far from being experts, they were screaming at the dogs to be quiet and banging on the doors, which did nothing but show their ignorance. I am totally disgusted and will never visit that jail again.

Would you keep your son outside to live in the winter cold.  When you take a dog into your home it becomes part of your family.  I am sure with proper socilalization your present dog would rather be in with you. They get lonely just people do.  It gets cold in New York.  It is cruel to keep a dog outside to live, they get cold to just like you would.  A lab??? they have short hair.  Please.  You know.......You kind of disgust me

We adopted a black lab from the Tacoma Washington Humane Society.  We got a very happy 10 month old black lab.  She is a wonderful smart dog.  The people at the Humane Society were busy but, polite.  They wanted to know if we had a fenced yard and if the dog would be an inside dog. Yes to both.  It was a bit spendy, but it included  dog food, spay, micro chip, first shots, vet check and treatment of Kennel cough along with meds (its almost inpossible to prevent Kennel cough in this enviornment, so they treat it).  They do not want the dog to have to  come back.  They wanted to make sure she would be happy and well taken care of, and she is.

Well first of all if you could read you would have noticed I live in New Albany INDIANA, not New York. And for keeping my son outside, that is the stupidest thing you could have said. The problem with people like you is that you think animals and people are on the same level, THEY ARE NOT. I love my pets, but not like I love my son. My Golden Retriever has a thick coat that God gave her so she could live outside, and trust me she doesn't want to be inside. On REALLY cold nights, I do bring her in and she doesn't like it. NEWS FLASH: SHE WANTS TO BE OUTSIDE. She is a DOG! She would rather run on all the property we own than be couped up in a small room. God made animals to be outside, if he wanted them to live inside he would have taught them to swing a hammer.

This proves that humane education is still a necessity in our region.

In response to the one about not getting the dog because he would be an outside dog. You mentioned you had 58 acres, I would ****ume you live in the country. You probably have deer locally. Maybe you should go out and gather all the deer and other animals that God put in the woods and bring them in your house. It seems that these people think they know more about what is better for these animals than God did. Just go get you a dog somewhere else. There are plenty of places to get animals that are allowed to sleep outside. But if they live in a dog HOUSE aren't they really inside? hmmm got me thinking now.

OK first off I would like to say that your comment about "putting your son outside is the same thing" did nothing but make you look like a complete IDIOT! I think you're forgetting that um.. hmm let me think... ALL DOGS STARTED OUT WILD AND THEY ALL LIVED OUTSIDE! You didn't ever hear any stories about the pilgrims and indians having pet wolves or coyotes in their houses did you? Exactly! Where do you think they live??? Answer: OUTSIDE!

Now as for my experience at the humane society in Grand Island,NE. Well I am a highschool student who had to have community service hours for a program I am in called Youth Leadership of Tomorrow. Well I figured since I love to work with dogs it couldn't be all bad working there for a couple days, and I have been looking for a new hunting dog so I figured maybe after working with the dogs I would find one that could possibly work as a hunter... well I did and so I talked to my parents about the whole situation and I finally got the ok. So that SAME afternoon after I had left from working my parents went in to look at the 4 month old choclate lab. It seemed to be extremely intelligent and was calm so I knew this dog would certainly work for a hunting dog (I mean she had everything in her that I was looking for). Well soon after my parents had gone in to look at the pup I got a phone call saying I could get her if I wanted to so i got up and went back over to the humane society to see her one last time and just asked the ladies (whom which I got to know this morning after working with them) how old you had to be to adopt. Well they told me 19 which was fine I just asked if they could possibly hold the dog for me until my parents could come out after they got off work later tonight. Well they said the dog should still bet there, but never once said they couldn't "hold her" for me. Well I was gone for not even 15 minutes before my mom was at the humane society also and I was meeting her. We went in and seen the puppy one last time and just made sure that it was for sure what we wanted to do, and once we got done I put the puppy back on it's leash and walked it up to the front counter. Well once I got there the little lady behind the front desk told me there was an issue with the puppy and when I asked what it was she told me the people that were standing at the counter had already bought her, well I find this awful strange beings every person behind that desk knew that was the puppy I wanted, and when I walked in those same people who bought my dog out from under me were standing there, but yet they still gave me a collar to go back and get the pup and take it into the back room... does that sound a little strange to you? Well anyways we stood there and words were exchanged and I ended up having to stand there and hand the leash over and hold the puppy that I had been dreaming about all day over to an older man who couldn't ever step up and say to my 16 year old face that he was the S.O.B that just bought the dog out from under me. Needless to say I will never step foot in another humane society (no matter where it is) in my life. I have a couple adult friends that actually breed puppies but I have been taught and raised to help those in need so I have never once gotten an animal in my life that wasn't from the HS. They lost my volunteering, my business, my support for their business, and my act of caring about what they do. I guess if they are going to screw people over and be that hungry for $115 then they aren't worth my time.... They say what tears us down makes us stronger, but I can ****ure you I became stronger after tonight, and they will NEVER get the chance to tear me down EVER again!

- Signed.. You know who I am if you're from the GI Humane Society, I hope you read this and it hits you as hard as the words "they bought it before you" did to me.

I just happened upon this conversation... and I am sad.  I work at a Humane Society.  We try so hard to give these animals a second chance at happiness.  Not another chance to live in a backyard alone!  So many of the dogs we see are tied on chains and left alone and starved.  Why bother having a dog if it lives in your yard?  Dogs are pack animals (like God made them!).  You are their pack. Sure, they should have an active life and spend time outside, but that doesn't mean they should be cold and alone.  I don't care how much fur they have, they still need companionship.  Isn't that why they are called "companion animals"?
Besides, even if you want a dog for protection... they can't help you when they're outside, and they don't bond with you or want to protect you when you're not part of their "pack".

You can say all you want about God creating animals to be outside... but WE domesticated dogs and so it is our responsiblity to care for them. If they were wild... they could find their own food and wouldn't need people to care for them.  It is our fault that they are pets!  Be responsible and care about your animal.  Don't get one if you can't make the committment.  DO you think Greyhounds or Chihuahuas or short haired breeds are meant to be outdoors?  Only some breeds are meant to sustain cold weather, yet people still can't wrap their small brains around the idea. We're the ones who went and found breeds in other countries and warm climates and brought them here to sell and breed.

Dogs are serious luv bugs and deserve to have a companion and family to love them back...  Sitting in a yard is no kind of life for any animal or person.  Can you imagine, day in and day out, sitting in the yard waiting for someone to come see you, or feed you.  Their entire life is spent "waiting".  Get a cow and let it graze if that's what you want.  Dogs need more than a doghouse and food.

i too stumbled across this conversation and i too worked at an animal shelter. , working in that capacity is very difficult as one is required to judge how much love a person has in their heart for animals. , no one factor such as keeping a dog outside should deter an adoption. , did the shelter visit the home of the perspective adopter to see how well adjusted his/her other outside dogs were? , i have two large dogs that love to be outside in cold weather lying in the snow. , maybe i should have been denied giving them a good home because i don''t have air conditioning. , just a thought.

Adopt from your county Animal Control & Care Facility, the animals there are on death row.  At least the ones at the humane society have more than 3 to 5 days to get an owner before they are killed.  Typically Animal Control centers are grossly underfunded so are basically concentration camp type places where the animals are scared to death and desperate for thier lives.  You never hear about these places because they have no money to advertise, etc.  Please adopt from Animal Control, save a life.

I happened upon this story while searching for an animal control agency to see what could be done about a dog that attacked my brother, but I am so amazed at how rediculous some people are....I mean COME ON...these shelters have pets that need homes....people want to take them home and love them and feed them, i don't see the problem that having dogs outside poses. I have 5 dogs, 3 cats and 2 horses....who all happen to live outside. Every single animal I own was a rescue animal except for 1 horse...and might I add they all love it outside...I think it is ludicrice to base adoptions of needy pets to good homes on whether they will live outside or not...imagine what would have happened to my 850 lb. stud horse if I hadn't rescued him...gave him food and water and a nice clean barn to be kept in (which by the way is outside). I guess it's a good thing they didn't insist that he be kept indoors. You people who think that fur or no fur they should be indoors...get real...animals like the outdoors...yes every now and then you get a bog old lazy dog that would rather be indoors, and if a person wants to share their home with the pet...more power to them but dogs would rather be outside. I applaud every pet owner who takes care of their pets and those who have adopted pets from shelters and I believe they should be cut some slack...is it worth having a dog be put to sleep for lack of interested persons wanting to adopt just because there is a clause here and there about the living indoors or outdoors? If so, stop advertising on tv and in newspapers that these pets are available...what's the point?

I also just happened upon this site as a result of searching for info regarding starting my own rescue. As previsouly stated dogs are pack animals and they want to be with their family. OF COURSE they enjoy being outside-so do humans but I wouldnt want to be outside permanently!!! I agree 100% with the HS rules about not leaving dogs outside. As a matter of fact I dont think some HS rules are stringent enough. I think house visits should be mandatory before adoption. Now I didnt always feel this way but some things that have happened over the pst few years have changed my way of thinking. First of all we have 5 dogs and one cat-ALL are inside animals with free reign to the backyard via a doggie door. But a few years ago, before we bought this house, we had two of the dogs living outside. I cannot tell you how much better dogs they have become since living indoors with us for the past 2 years. Im trying to make it up to them for the time they spent outside, part-time in a kennel. I feel horrible about it...
The other thing is I had a friend who is a "pet-collector". 4 human kids, extremely low-income, barely able to make ends meet, and insists on constantly getting dogs and cats. The HS here has let her adopt twice now, one dog was given away and the other was hit and killed by a car. She doesnt keep on top of their vaccinations and worming meaning what ever "freebie" the shelter gives her is all they get. She feeds them crap food and cant afford a vet when they get sick. ONE visit by the HS society would have put a stop to the adoptions. ANYONE could tell by visiting her home that she was not able to care for the dogs properly. She will keep a dog inside unless the house training gets off track due to her lazy-ness and then the dog is banned to the yard. Last I heard she has a pug that has a skin infection that she cant afford to treat and 17 cats outside...just makes me sick!
I just feel that if you cant give your pet(s) the absolute best then dont bother with mediocrity. After all they give us their undying love and devotion which is all they have-dont they deserve the same in return?

I am the one from New Albany IN that was turned down for adoption because I keep my animals outside. I just wanted to give an update. After being turned down for adoption I started checking the newspaper and found a man that had full blooded labs for sale. He had 2 Chocolate and 2 Golden for $50 each. So after going to look at them I bought 2 from him, 1 of the Chocolate and 1 of the Golden, and my sister-in-law took the other 2. Now both of my new puppies and my 8yr old Golden Retriever live HAPPILY outside under my deck in their Puppy Condo. It has straw and cedar chips as the floor and is out of the wind. It is really warm and they are HAPPY and so am I and SO IS MY SON.

Everyone knows that there are some people that have dogs outside chained to a post where they cant run and very seldom get any attention, and I hate when this happens also. I had a woman down the street that was this type of person and she had her dogs taken away from her, so her son stole my dog and when I got him back he came down with Parvo and he died a terrible death. This kind of person is much worse than any animal.

All we hear about is the "TERRIBLE" people who keep their dogs outside. But just because you keep your animals inside does not mean you are loving and your animals are well taken care of. I know people who keep all their animals inside and they don't let them EVER go outside. Their house is almost inhabitable and smells worse than a unclean litterbox. Their animals poop and urinate all over the house and both the animals and the humans live in that. My dogs don't poop in THEIR house. I was turned down for adoption just because I was going to keep them outside. PERIOD. I take them to the vet, in fact we went yesterday, and they are well fed, loved, and played with. I don't think I am the exception to this rule, but was grouped with the worst because I want my pets to have their own house, not mine.

i had the same problem with the humane society in crawfordsville indiana i had lost my dog and i went into there and tried to get it back but they told me i had to adopt my own dog which i think is so stupid i even had records that she belong to me. I called the humane society 3 days after she was missing and i left my name and number but they said they have no records of me calling so i went ahead and tried to get an adoption but i got denied because my other dogs werent fixed which i have no idea why that has something to do with an adoption. I called and they told me she was already up for an adoption but i think it was a lie cuz all they wanna do is make money

Bravo to the humane society for refusing you a dog. You have no business having one. Dogs and cats belong inside. I pity your lack of sensitivity to the poor dogs in your care. I volunteer in a shelter and believe me, your name would have been quickly posted on the "Do Not Adopt" that goes from shelter to shelter. I hope you learn to take better care of your animals.

Isn't that awfully rude? I mean, so what if this woman likes keeping her dogs outside? They aren't alone, they're close to where she is, and they're being well cared for. My neighbor had a dog that he kept outide in a pen next to the house. The dog had his own dog house that the owner filled with straw in the winter to keep him warm, and he was fed at the same time everyday, had water whenever he needed it, and when the guy's kids were outside they played with him. The dog was happy, always wagging his tail and everything...so I really don't see how this is such a big issue.

Now, for myself, I have two dogs that are mainly inside dogs. My Australian Shepherd adores being outside and she just entertains herself for hours by running circles around our pool, while my Rottweiler mix just sits at the door until we let her back in again. Different dogs prefer different living conditions. Mine like being inside and outside, while this woman who keeps her dogs outside has dogs that obviously prefer to be outside.

I understand all of you horrible stories...But PLEASE be mindful that just because the humane society did not do business properly, the poor little homeless dogs are the ones that are suffering. You are not getting back at the Humane Society, but leaving a dog homeless....
Just a thought! Its not the poor homeless animal's fault!
