Humane Society holding animal shelter fundraiser, membership drive By KATHRYN HIRSCHFELD Staff Writer HAMILTON - The dream of the Marion County Humane Society to have an animal shelter was given a big paw step in the right direction with the donation of five acres of land one year ago from the Marion County****mission. The next step for the humane society in funding a home for its furry friends is occurring now with the kickoff of a fundraising and membership drive. “We know this is a difficult time to be asking for donations with so many out of work,” said Marion County Humane Society President Bill Nowlin, “but if everyone would ****t help a little bit and all the municipalities in the county would pull together, this dream could b****e a reality.” Nowlin has been the president of the humane society since its inception in June of 2007. He is an avid animal lover who has four dogs, all strays, which he says he couldn’t live without. “Love me, love my dogs,” he says. Nowlin’s vehicle also sports a ‘Love Them, Fix Them,’ license tag which is sponsored by the Alabama Veterinary Medical ****ociation. “The ball is in our county’s court,” he said. “There is a great need for this animal shelter. What are we going to do about it? We now have the land for the facility, but we need donations to build the shelter.” Donations can be mailed to the Marion County Humane Society at P.O. Box 1642, Hamilton, Ala., 35570. For more****rmation, interested persons may go to www.marioncountyhumanesociety****. The e-mail address is marioncountyhumanesociety@yahoo****, but Nowlin says there is currently no official phone number. “If someone has to talk to**** and doesn’t feel****fortable contacting**** via the Inte****, they can call me at 921-9123, treasurer Kathy Ballard at 921-2502 or board member Bettie Blaine at 921-0091. “Besides donations, we are also looking for volunteers to help during our fundraisers or who would like to donate their time to ****ist with the other activities of a humane society,” said Nowlin. ****spective members are also invited to attend any of the humane society’s meetings, which are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Hamilton City Hall. Nowlin wrote the following for the Humane Society membership flyer. “The dream is to build an animal shelter here that will help the unwanted and a****ed animals of Marion County and give them a chance. No one****bably needs to be told of the tremend**** need of this shelter. “You can help make this dream b****e a reality. The task before**** is great, but it is exceeded by the need of those that have no voice, the unwanted and a****ed animals of our county. If we won’t help them, who will? On their behalf, we thank you for your help.” The humane society has raised $10,000 so far through memberships, donations and fundraisers, against an amount of $225,000, which is called for in the animal shelter construction plans. The****posed animal shelter includes both dog and cat holding kennels, exam areas, a quarantine section, a lobby area, a supply area, a supply room and bathrooms. The facility will be located in the Pikeville****munity on County Road 2, off of Highway 43, ****t past the S. T. Bunn asphalt plant. Nowlin says that one of the most important things that people can do is to have their pet spayed or neutered. “It’s a small cost to pay when****pared to all the benefits. If everybody in Marion County would do that, then the humane society could better deal with the****blem of pet overpopulation, which is created and perpetuated one litter at a time.” Nowlin also said that whenever ****inesses or in****tries are looking for possible new locations, they not only look for quality of life aspects like schools, hospitals, fire departments, etc., but they also look to see if a****munity has an animal shelter. “It says a lot about the****munity. It shows that people care and it shows that people are ready to deal with the****blems and the needs. The needs beget the****blems.” Concerning stray cats and dogs, Nowlin said, “Cats are better at being feral--they can live off mice. Stray dogs are the biggest****blem. Years ago, they were wild and able to hunt, but they have been domesticated--which means they are now totally dependent on****. “Stray dogs have no home and no consistent source of food or water. They either starve to death, are run over or die of disease--that’s their future. The****blem is here--the fix is where? “If we could get an animal shelter and people would spay or neuter their pets, the rest of the****blems in this area could be addressed in a humane way,” said Nowlin. Members of the humane society are currently trying to place unwanted and abandoned animals through a****working system, which Nowlin says is not a very successful way to do it. “We try to put people needing ****istance in contact with our members, but sometimes the sad alternative is that they ****t be referred to an animal control facility.” Nowlin firmly believes in the humane society’s dream of the animal shelter b****ing a reality. “If you have a dream and a passion for that dream, it is amazing what you can do. “There’s enough pain and hurt in the world. With a small m****ary sacrifice, we would deal with these pet****blems and dramatically reduce the pain and hurt in our county. “If everybody cared and pulled together, this dream could****e true. You can make a difference--here’s your chance.” The Marion County Humane Society is a non****fit****anization and all donations are tax deductible. For a limited time during the membership and fundraising drive, those making donations to the humane society in honor of--or in memory of--a beloved pet will be able to have their pet’s**** printed in the Journal Record.
