I volunteer and work for a no-kill shelter. Here is the issue we are having...

We have a very large yellow lab mix who was surrendered to us. We have had her for a good amount of time, and it's been nothing but problems. She does not like any other dogs and would kill them. When she's outside, she barks very angry-ly at all other living things and when she's inside she rams her head into her cage door to get out at kids and other people she doesnt know. She was adopted and we were all sooo excited. After a month, the 2 guys just couldnt take it anymore and asked to bring her back. She was very loving to her, but whenever other people were around, she would be so nasty. When they would walk her, she would lunge at people (esp. kids). She would drag them down the street trying to get at people. The guys just couldnt take it and i understand why! She has gotten ahold of my hand before and bit me. Shes not a friendly dog at all.

The issue that we are having is that we have this very unadoptable, nasty dog taking up a large cage that can't be used for anyone else. We could be rescuing many other dogs, but we can't fit them. Some of us think that she should be euthanized, but others say no. Some say that she needs training so we have an evaluater coming on monday to look at her, but we don't understand how we are suppose to train her in a shelter atmosphere...

What is your opinion?

I think it is a good idea to have a trainer by to see if anything can be done.  It's amazine what even that dog whisperer can do.  I ****ume she is spayed.   If the trainer does not have luck I would euthanize her.  She is a danger to people and other animals.  She would be a huge liability, and it's not much life staying in a cage all the time.  She is probably not getting your full attention either with the other animals you need to care for.  I'm pretty sure a no kill shelter has to euthanize occasionally, due to health problems that can't be fixed or behavioural problems.  I guess they have to weigh the pros and cons and think about what quality of life the dog has.   Unless she can be trained successfully, if she was at our shelter and acted like that, unfortunately she wouldn't be there long.....

Have you thought about Foster Care for the animal, many places that run out of space or room in a shelter lend out the animals to foster homes so that they can be used to living in a home before they are adopted.  I think the reason she is being so mad and vicious at people is because she could have been abused at one point in her life very badly and is just defending herself and haven't been trusting to humans very well.  I think putting her with the right foster home is all she needs.
